I love this time of year – summer isn’t quite here (or hit and miss at best!), but getting your shades out makes it feel like summer has properly arrived. They can add a summer vibe to any outfit, and if you get them right they will not only update your outfit they will also flatter your face shape.
Sunglasses styles this year follow a similar trend to clothes fashion and show a varied mix of minimalism to full on maximalism – meaning there is a trend that suits your style personality. And don’t forget to take your face shape into consideration – as that will ensure that you aren’t just on trend, but you also look fabulous!
Bug Eye Frames
This isn’t a trend for the faint hearted! Think retro 70s, and size is of the extreme! There are lots of black frames around, which is great to add to the statement – and will suit those with dark or silver hair. However there are softer shades, including browns and light tortoise shell which can be easier to wear for many, and also softens the bold styling.
The roundness of the frame sit best on more angular face shapes – think of the curved lines as a balance to a straighter face. This example from Gucci is a classic
Whilst this more budget friendly option from Next is a great way to try the trend with less financial commitment!
90s Ovals
In contrast the 90s oval shapes are more classic and minimalist. They can have slim metal frames and a small narrow silhouette. As with the Bug Eye frames, black and browns dominate. However there are some colours lenses out there if you like a different look. Remember though – if you are thinking of a coloured lens, make sure its a colour / shade that flatters your skin tone – so blues for cooler skin, and yellows for warmer skins etc.
However some of the trends are merging as with these from M&S which have a thicker frame.
As these glasses trend to have less depth to the lens, they are best on petite face shapes.
Supersized Aviators
These are aviators, but not as you have known them before. They are bigger and bolder! This shape is great on heart shaped faces, whilst those with a squarer jaw should avoid as the teardrop shape of the lens will draw attention to the jaw line.
These from Ray-Ban are a prime example, and lots of fun! And definitely bold!
Whilst I also love these from Accessorize – they still have the bold shape, but the softer colour and metal sides add a softness to what can be a bold style.
